How to Prevent Frozen Pipes in Estonian Winter

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes in Estonian Winter

Frozen pipes are one of the most common winter emergencies in Tallinn and Harjumaa. When water freezes inside a pipe, it expands and can crack or burst the pipe entirely — leading to serious water damage. Here is what you can do to prevent it.

1. Insulate exposed pipes

Any pipes running through unheated spaces — attics, basements, garages, or exterior walls — are at risk. Wrap them with foam pipe insulation or heat tape before temperatures drop. This is cheap insurance against a very expensive repair.

2. Keep the heating on, even when away

If you leave for the weekend or holiday, never turn your heating completely off. Keep it at a minimum of 12–15°C throughout the home, including rooms you don't use. Cold rooms with exterior walls are exactly where pipes freeze first.

3. Let a trickle of water run overnight

On nights with extreme cold (below -15°C), let a cold-water tap on an exterior wall drip slowly. Moving water is much harder to freeze than still water.

If you turn on a tap and nothing comes out, or water trickles slowly, you likely have a frozen pipe. Do not try to thaw it with an open flame — this can crack the pipe or start a fire. Our team uses professional steam equipment to safely thaw frozen pipes 24/7 across Tallinn and Harjumaa. Call us now: +372 56 27 39 39.
