How to Prevent Frozen Pipes in Estonian Winter

Frozen pipes are one of the most common winter emergencies in Tallinn and Harjumaa. When water freezes inside a pipe, it expands and can crack or burst the pipe entirely — leading to serious water damage. Here is what you can do to prevent it.
1. Insulate exposed pipes
Any pipes running through unheated spaces — attics, basements, garages, or exterior walls — are at risk. Wrap them with foam pipe insulation or heat tape before temperatures drop. This is cheap insurance against a very expensive repair.
2. Keep the heating on, even when away
If you leave for the weekend or holiday, never turn your heating completely off. Keep it at a minimum of 12–15°C throughout the home, including rooms you don't use. Cold rooms with exterior walls are exactly where pipes freeze first.
3. Let a trickle of water run overnight
On nights with extreme cold (below -15°C), let a cold-water tap on an exterior wall drip slowly. Moving water is much harder to freeze than still water.
